Interwoven Spaces – Design by Lake Balaton

In Siófok, in a lakeside apartment building overlooking Lake Balaton, our clients owned two adjacent apartments. Due to this starting situation, each apartment had its own separate set of functions: two entrances, two hallways, two kitchens… Although the two units had been connected by a sliding door, they still functioned as separate spaces. The smaller apartment remained underused, while the larger one lacked the necessary size and layout to function properly on its own.
Our clients approached us with the challenge of transforming these two apartments into one cohesive holiday home—creating a comfortable, well-functioning space for their family of five.

In terms of both layout and daily use, the kitchen–dining–living area forms the heart of the apartment.
This is where the family spends most of their time—and it’s also the main gathering space when friends come to visit. Creating a spacious, open area that could be comfortably shared by everyone was a key priority. The result is a generous kitchen and dining zone, organically connected to a slightly recessed, bay-like living area and a cozy children’s corner.

Together with our clients, we agreed that the lakeside atmosphere of Balaton should be subtly reflected in the interior as well.
This concept appears in carefully selected details: a boat-inspired welded steel partition with translucent polycarbonate backing separates the hallway from the living room, creating a water-like, shimmering effect. Other playful touches include fish- and mermaid-patterned wallpaper, scale-like bathroom tiles, and the deep blue color of the kitchen.

The choice of materials was strongly influenced by the holiday home function of the apartment.
Durability, ease of maintenance, and quality were key considerations. The entire space—floors and bathroom walls alike—is finished in microcement, creating a seamless, uniform surface throughout. This neutral base is gently contrasted by carefully placed bursts of color in selected elements.

At the center of the long, rectangular layout lies the shared living space—from here, everything else unfolds.
On one side, the parents’ bedroom and en-suite bathroom are tucked into a private, self-contained block, offering a quiet retreat when they need privacy and rest.

On the opposite side of the central living space, a separate wing was created for the three young daughters—each with her own personal realm.
Their individual bedrooms are tailored to their current needs and preferences, while a shared bathroom, finished with shimmering mermaid-scale tiles, adds a playful and magical touch.

"I truly loved working on this project.
The location itself—the southern shore of Lake Balaton—is one of my favorites, and the challenge of weaving two separate spaces into a cohesive whole made the task especially exciting. It was a rewarding process to find thoughtful solutions that met every need as they emerged.

What made the entire journey even smoother and more enjoyable was the clients’ cooperative and purposeful attitude, which remained consistent throughout both the design and construction phases."

Client testimonial:
“For us, the biggest challenge was achieving the perfect layout of spaces and functions. From the very first floor plan, Kata surprised us with a nearly ideal arrangement, which then evolved through the refinement of details. She approached the task with a wealth of ideas, endless patience, and a deep commitment to every little detail. Throughout the construction phase, she continued to support us in every way. I truly hope we’ll have the chance to work together again on another interior design project.”
